The Power of Music in My Life

Today marked the five year anniversary of my mom's passing. One of the greatest gifts my mom shared with me throughout her life was her love and passion for music, specifically musical theater. Around 5 pm tonight, I was baking loaves of our favorite chocolate chip banana bread, while listening to the Julie Andrews channel on Pandora. I found myself singing along, and as I did, my spirits were lifted little by little. I felt my mom's memory very strongly in those moments and could imagine her singing along with me (she had a beautiful voice!). I was reminded of all of the times growing up when I turned to music to lift my spirits just like today. It has always had the power to transcend me to another place.

No matter what happened that day or circumstances that arose (we all know those days growing up), music never failed me. Singing and dancing along to my records in the rec room at the back of our house made every care in my world melt by the wayside as I became the characters in the musicals and expressed what they were feeling in their moments of song. By having the ability to let go of my worries and cares from the day, I was able to keep up a positive outlook on life. A favorite quote of mine is that of Joseph Addison, who once said, "Cheerfulness keeps up a kind of daylight in the mind, and fills it with a steady and perpetual serenity." Music has allowed me to do this.

I hope to share this gift with my children one day and it would fill me with a sense of honor if, through our classes at Dream Big, we can carry on this legacy and help to encourage and foster this type of love for music in our students as well. It's a gift that keeps on giving as I have learned throughout every stage of my life. Thanks Mom!!!
